Start with the band

The band is the most significant proportion of the ring and is the easiest starting point. Consider the metal that your partner will love. Options can include:
  • Platinum – A robust, durable and stylish metal
  • Yellow Gold – A classic, traditional and timeless choice
  • White Gold – A stronger, more durable option that contains zinc and nickel to provide a silver appearance. However, it can require regular coating
  • Rose Gold – A popular on-trend gold with a hint of pink blush, which has a more versatile price range. However, it is not suitable for those with a copper allergy
These are just some of the most popular options for an engagement ring. However, when you design a bespoke engagement ring, the choice of metal is entirely up to you. Again, our team are available to offer our advice and help you find the right option for your needs.

Think about style

The next consideration is the style of ring. There are endless choices from vintage to contemporary, art deco to classic. Some of the most popular that can help you hone in on the right style for bespoke engagement ring include:
  • Solitaire – A single stone set high on the ring
  • Trilogy – Also known as a trinity ring, has three set stones. Typically, the centre stone is larger and set higher than the complementing stones on either side
  • Halo – Usually has a larger gemstone in the middle surrounded by a circle of smaller stones in a halo shape
  • Channel Set – This typically has a larger gemstone in the middle and smaller stones embedded along the band of the ring
  • Cathedral – This creates a V-shape for the stone to sit in and provides strong protection for the gemstone
  • Infinity – Symbolising everlasting love, this ring has an infinity symbol using intertwining lines on the band
  • Pavé – This gives an appearance of a solid sparkling surface where you can only see gemstones, usually diamond, and don’t see the metal of the band below
  • Swirl – The band has smooth, flowing lines with swirls around the main gemstone
  • Stacking – This is where the engagement, wedding and infinity ring can sit seamlessly together by following the same lines. Also known as an integrated ring.

Select the stones

The stones in an engagement ring are the most important feature. They also offer the greatest opportunity for you to create something really individual and personal. Perhaps the recipient has a favourite stone that you would like to include in the design, or perhaps there is a stone with some significant meaning for the both of you. Susannah Lovis can source high-quality gemstones from across the market at the best possible value for you, which will help make this vital decision-making process run smoothly.

Diamonds Are Forever

Diamonds are traditionally the most popular engagement ring stone of choice. The stone represents eternity and commitment, which has seen the precious stone be placed on many engaged hands over generations. When designing a ring with Susannah Lovis, the exact diamonds you want can be sourced for your design and ensure that these stones have come from a reputable and trustworthy source.

There are many diamond alternatives to choose from, which can be more affordable and unique than traditionally mined diamonds.

Spotlight With Sapphires

If you are looking for a vibrant pop of colour in your design, sapphires are excellent. While they are traditionally known for being blue, sapphires come in many different colours. They are second only to diamonds in terms of durability, making them the perfect stone for an engagement ring.

Enchanting Alternatives

Rubies and emeralds are also traditional favourites, but more contemporary alternatives including morganite, opal and onyx are also rising in popularity. Whether you have specific stones in mind or would like to start at the drawing board from scratch, the dedicated team at Susannah Lovis will be able to help you come up with the right collection of stones for your specific ring, as well as source them all for you.

History And Heritage

When you design an engagement ring at Susannah Lovis, you can also re-use an inherited stone or family heirloom in your own design for an engagement ring. This can be something truly unique and special and gives a new lease of life to a previously significant piece of jewellery.

Layout and design

Once you have considered the different elements, you can begin to play and create the right layout and design. For example, you may want to consider the different cuts for the stones, such as princess, round brilliant, baguette, heart or oval. You can also consider the setting and overall appearance of the ring to create the perfect finish.

How Long Does It Take To Design And Make A Bespoke Engagement Ring?

At Susannah Lovis, we design and create all of the bespoke engagement rings for our special clients at our London workshop. Keeping all of the aspects in one location helps speed up the process and means that this careful, intricate work can take just four to six weeks. One of the factors that can vary the timeline is the time it takes to source the stones. However, the team at Susannah Lovis have many contacts within the industry to help make this process as quick and easy as possible. We guarantee that a bespoke engagement ring is well worth the wait.
